Indian Creek dry ice blasting

Indian Creek calls tend to arrive with a constraint attached, which is exactly where this method earns its keep.

How the work runs here

Everything arrives on the van: compressor, hose, operator and containment. It is also why nothing has to be crated up and driven across town, the work happens where the machine already sits in Indian Creek.

The pellet turns straight to gas when it hits, which means no sand in the machine and no sludge on the floor. The only thing to collect is the contaminant itself, and that is included.

Questions from Indian Creek

Is Indian Creek in your area?

We do. The whole point of a mobile setup is that Indian Creek is no further than any other stop on the schedule.

What does the site need to have?

Access to the equipment and somewhere to park the compressor. No water hookup, no drain and no wash bay.

Can you work around our schedule?

Usually. Tell us the window you have, including overnight or a planned shutdown, and we will tell you honestly what fits in it.

Who calls you around here?

A mix, vehicle work, shop equipment, marine and light industrial. Same rig, different constraint each time.

Do you charge for the drive?

Distance can factor in. You will hear about it up front, not on the invoice.

What is the first step?

Send the equipment, the location and a short description with photos if you have them. One of the owners calls you back.

Why Indian Creek equipment ends up like this

Salt carries a long way inland here, and it keeps working on metal every day of the year. Which is exactly the situation where a non-abrasive, low-moisture method is worth the call.

Shops, marine yards, warehouses and home garages all end up with the same problem in different forms. In every case the truck brings its own air and its own containment, so you are not adapting the site to suit the method.

With no slurry to contain and no media to recover, a confined Miami-Dade County site stops being a problem.

What comes off

The deposits we see most

Most calls involve one of the following. The common factor is a bond between two things that should not be bonded.

  • Ink and printing residue

Dried ink on precision roller faces, cleaned without altering the cell structure that does the work.

  • Food residue

Burnt-on product, fat and sugar on processing gear, with no chemical residue left on a contact surface.

  • Grease and oil

The greasy base coat that traps grit and dust. It releases early and takes the loose material with it.

  • Carbon and soot

Baked carbon on a manifold, oven or weld fixture. Thermal shock is exactly the wrong thing for the bond holding it on, which is why this works.

  • Adhesive and sealant

The stubborn film under old tape, or the gasket that tore and left half of itself behind.

  • Resin and mold release

Release agent and resin build-up on tooling, where a solvent fix trades one residue for another.

  • Paint and coatings

Selective removal, layer by layer, on parts where media blasting would cut into the substrate.

How a job runs

What happens once you call

If you have not seen this done before, the process is worth reading once. Nothing below is hidden in a footnote.

  • We look at access and containment

The layout decides the method more often than the contaminant does. We work out reach and containment before quoting anything.

  • We test a small area

An out-of-sight patch comes first so pressure and pellet size are proven before anything that shows. Soft alloys, older paint and bare metal each want different numbers.

  • We blast, then clean up

There is no spent media to recover, only the deposit, which we collect before packing up.

  • You look before we pack up

If something needs another pass we do it then, on site, while the rig is still running. That is a better outcome for everyone than a callback.

  • You describe the job

We start with what it is and what is on it. Whether it can come offline matters as much as the contaminant, and a wrong-tool answer is one we give up front rather than after the invoice.

The comparison

The other ways to do this

  • Solvent and degreaser

Softens the contaminant but leaves a film, fumes and a disposal problem, and attacks finishes you meant to keep.

  • Hand scraping

Slow, inconsistent, and the tool marks the surface. Fine for a small area, unworkable across a machine.

  • Media blasting

Effective and indiscriminate. On soft metal or a finished surface it does damage you then have to fix.

  • Pressure washing

The water has to go somewhere, and on most equipment that somewhere is inside it.

  • Dry ice

Thermal contraction cracks the bond between deposit and surface, then the pellet gasses off. Nothing abrasive, nothing wet, nothing left.

What happens in your space

We cover what should not be hit before anything gets blasted. It takes minutes and saves arguments.

Dry ice is carbon dioxide in solid form. It is non-toxic and leaves no residue, but it does displace oxygen in an enclosed space, so ventilation is part of the setup rather than an afterthought.

The process is loud. Hearing protection is standard for anyone in the working area, which is why you will see ear defenders in most of our photographs.

Surfaces come out cold. On some jobs that means waiting a few minutes before handling, and on others it means condensation as the part returns to ambient temperature.
