Commercial Vessel Ice Blasting

Commercial Vessel is one of the jobs dry ice blasting was made for. We clean it without water, without chemicals and without anything abrasive touching the surface.

What builds up, and why it matters

On this kind of work the problem is salt, corrosion product, oil, exhaust soot and bilge residue. South Florida salt air never stops working on a vessel. Abrasive cleaning takes the protective finish with the salt; dry ice removes the contamination and leaves the coating.

Work happens dockside, in the yard or aboard. The people who call us about commercial vessel are usually captains, yards and vessel owners, and the thing they are actually worried about is stripping a coating that was the only thing holding corrosion back.

The method

Why dry ice and not the alternatives

  • Non-abrasive

Sand and soda wear the surface down along with the dirt. Dry ice uses cold to break the bond, so the metal under it stays as it was.

  • Low moisture

A panel or motor can be cleaned without soaking anything, which is why the method suits electrical work.

  • No secondary waste

Grit, soda and shell media pile up and have to be hauled off. The ice turns to gas, so the only cleanup is the deposit.

  • Often no teardown

Disassembly is where the labor hides. With dry ice, much of it is not needed, which is where most of the saving shows up.

Questions we get asked first

Will it damage the surface underneath?

On metal, painted parts and most finishes, it does not. The process is non-abrasive. Where we are less sure, an old coating or a soft alloy for example, we try it somewhere hidden and look before going further.

Do you have to take the equipment apart for commercial vessel?

In a lot of cases, no. The pellets get into corners and recesses that a brush or scraper cannot reach, so most of the cleaning happens with everything still bolted together.

How much mess does it make?

Far less than the alternatives, because the blasting media disappears. What is left is the contaminant itself, which we contain and clean up.

Do you come to us?

That is the only way we do it. A mobile rig means plants, shops, driveways and docks are all fair game across South Florida, up to roughly a hundred miles out from Miami.

What does a job cost?

We need to understand the job before we can put a number on it, so the first step is you telling us about it. Photos make that faster. The figure you get back comes from one of the owners and reflects the actual work.

How soon can you look at it?

The first answer comes quickly even when it is a no. If dry ice is the wrong fit for your job, we will tell you on that first call so you are not waiting on us for nothing.

The comparison

Why not just pressure wash it

  • Solvent and degreaser

Chemistry works, but you inherit ventilation, waste handling and a film on the surface.

  • Hand scraping

Fine on a patch, hopeless on a machine, and the blade leaves its own evidence.

  • Media blasting

Grit removes material to do its job, so a machined face or a plated part pays for the cleaning.

  • Pressure washing

Forces water where water should not go, looms, bearings, seams, and then the job stops while it dries.

  • Dry ice

Thermal shock breaks the bond. The pellet sublimates, so nothing abrasive touches the part and nothing is left to collect but the contaminant.

What comes off

What dry ice actually removes

The rule of thumb is simple: anything stuck on rather than built in. These are the deposits we see most.

  • Adhesive and sealant

Sound deadening, tape residue, gasket material and sealant that has cured onto a face it was never meant to stay on.

  • Resin and mold release

Solvents soften resin but can leave a film of their own. The ice removes the residue dry and adds nothing to the tool.

  • Paint and coatings

Taken off in a controlled way when what is underneath matters more than speed.

  • Salt and corrosion product

Salt deposit and the oxidation it starts. Anything abrasive removes the protection along with the salt.

  • Ink and printing residue

Dried ink on precision roller faces, cleaned without altering the cell structure that does the work.

  • Food residue

Carbonized product, fat, starch and sugar build-up on processing equipment, cleaned without chemicals touching a food contact surface.

  • Grease and oil

Oil film is the layer everything else sticks to. Remove it and half the job is already done.

How a job runs

How a job actually runs

Every job follows the same steps, whether it is an engine bay or a production line. Here they are, one at a time.

  • You look before we pack up

We would rather you find the missed spot while we are standing there than a week later. Another pass on the day is the cheapest fix available.

  • You describe the job

What the equipment is, what is on it, where it lives, and whether it can be shut down. Photos tell us more than a paragraph. If dry ice is the wrong tool we say so on that call rather than after taking your money.

  • We look at access and containment

Access drives the plan: reach, siting, masking, and the route the removed material takes off the job. It is the part customers think about least and we think about most.

  • We test a small area

Some coatings are meant to stay. A test on an unseen spot shows whether the ice takes only the grime or starts to work on the finish underneath.

  • We blast, then clean up

One mess instead of two: the pellet vanishes and we take away what it removed.

What the job is like to stand next to

Masking happens first. Whatever is adjacent and vulnerable gets covered before the hose is picked up.

The gas the ice turns into is the same carbon dioxide we breathe out, and it leaves nothing on the surface. In a closed room it can crowd out air, though, so we open things up before starting.

This is not a quiet method. Ear defenders are standard issue on site for anyone nearby.

The cold is what does the cleaning, so some of it stays in the part for a while. Gloves help if you need to handle it right after we finish.
