Layton dry ice blasting

When we take a job in Layton, the rig comes to the machine rather than the other way round.

How the work runs here

Everything arrives on the van: compressor, hose, operator and containment. It is also why nothing has to be crated up and driven across town, the work happens where the machine already sits in Layton.

Nothing of the ice survives the blast. That removes the entire cleanup problem every other method creates, leaving only the deposit that came off the equipment.

Questions from Layton

What is the first step?

Send the equipment, the location and a short description with photos if you have them. One of the owners calls you back.

Do you actually come out to Layton?

We do. The whole point of a mobile setup is that Layton is no further than any other stop on the schedule.

What do you need from us on site?

Space for the rig and a way to reach the machine. Everything else arrives with us.

How flexible are the hours?

Often yes, a lot of industrial work happens overnight or during a planned outage. Give us the window and we will say straight away whether it is realistic.

What sort of work do you get called for?

It ranges from a single restoration project to a plant maintenance window. The method does not change much.

Do you charge for the drive?

Sometimes, on the longer runs. Either way it is discussed before anyone commits.

What the climate does here

Afternoon storms mean equipment that lives outside is wet, then hot, then wet again. It is also why an abrasive method costs you twice: once in the cleaning, again in the finish you removed.

Residential garages and small shops sit alongside the commercial work on any given week. In every case the truck brings its own air and its own containment, so you are not adapting the site to suit the method.

With no slurry to contain and no media to recover, a confined Monroe County site stops being a problem.

What comes off

The deposits we see most

Most calls involve one of the following. The common factor is a bond between two things that should not be bonded.

  • Resin and mold release

Release agent and resin build-up on tooling, where a solvent fix trades one residue for another.

  • Paint and coatings

Removed selectively where the substrate underneath has to survive, which rules out most abrasive approaches.

  • Salt and corrosion product

The year-round problem on the coast. The finish holding corrosion back has to survive the cleaning.

  • Ink and printing residue

Dried ink and coating build-up on rollers and press components, where the surface texture is the product.

  • Food residue

Burnt-on product, fat and sugar on processing gear, with no chemical residue left on a contact surface.

  • Grease and oil

Oil film is the layer everything else sticks to. Remove it and half the job is already done.

  • Carbon and soot

The hard black crust on a housing, an oven or a weld cell. Bonded by heat, and the first thing to release under thermal shock.

How a job runs

What happens once you call

We explain the whole job up front. If something below does not make sense, ask, and one of the owners will walk you through it.

  • We look at access and containment

Hose run, compressor position, what needs masking, and where the contaminant is collected. For food and electrical jobs the containment plan takes longer to settle than the blasting does.

  • We test a small area

Some coatings are meant to stay. A test on an unseen spot shows whether the ice takes only the grime or starts to work on the finish underneath.

  • We blast, then clean up

The media disappears on contact; the contaminant does not. Gathering what came off is included, not a line added afterward.

  • You look before we pack up

We would rather you find the missed spot while we are standing there than a week later. Another pass on the day is the cheapest fix available.

  • You describe the job

Tell us the machine, the mess and the constraint. A couple of photos answers more than a long description, and if the honest answer is that something else suits it better, we say so.

The comparison

What the alternatives actually do

  • Hand scraping

It is the fallback when nothing else is available, and it shows on the surface afterward.

  • Media blasting

Cuts into the substrate by design. Fine on structural steel, wrong on aluminum, plating, machined faces or anything with a tolerance.

  • Pressure washing

Forces water where water should not go, looms, bearings, seams, and then the job stops while it dries.

  • Solvent and degreaser

Trades the deposit for a residue, plus ventilation and waste to deal with, and it is hard on the finish.

  • Dry ice

Thermal shock breaks the bond. The pellet sublimates, so nothing abrasive touches the part and nothing is left to collect but the contaminant.

What happens in your space

The gas the ice turns into is the same carbon dioxide we breathe out, and it leaves nothing on the surface. In a closed room it can crowd out air, though, so we open things up before starting.

This is not a quiet method. Ear defenders are standard issue on site for anyone nearby.

In humid weather a cold part will sweat as it warms up. That moisture comes out of the air and dries off on its own.

Everything the rig needs arrives with it. No tap, no drain, no outlet.
