On-Site Dry Ice Blasting

On-Site Dry comes to us when the usual cleaning methods are too harsh for the part. We clean it without water, without chemicals and without anything abrasive touching the surface.

What builds up, and why it matters

On this kind of work the problem is grease, carbon, adhesive and production residue across every kind of substrate. Most cleaning problems arrive with a constraint attached: it cannot get wet, it cannot be scratched, it cannot be taken apart, or it has to be back in service the same shift.

A mobile rig means the compressor, hose and operator arrive at your shop, plant or driveway. The people who call us about on-site dry are usually anyone who has been told their part is too delicate to clean properly, and the thing they are actually worried about is that the cleaning does more harm than the dirt did.

The method

Why dry ice and not the alternatives

  • Non-abrasive

Sand and soda wear the surface down along with the dirt. Dry ice uses cold to break the bond, so the metal under it stays as it was.

  • Low moisture

Nothing is left wet, so no water sits in seams, channels or behind covers. The equipment goes back into service dry.

  • No secondary waste

No secondary waste stream. Nothing is left from the blasting itself, and the contaminant that comes off gets contained and cleaned up by us.

  • Often no teardown

Much of this work is done in place, which is usually where the real saving is. The labor is in the disassembly, not the cleaning.

Questions we get asked first

Will it damage the surface underneath?

On most substrates, no. The pellet is soft and sublimates on impact, so it does thermal work rather than mechanical work. We still test an inconspicuous spot first on anything unusual.

Do you have to take the equipment apart for on-site dry?

Minimal disassembly is one of the main reasons people call us. Most work is done in place, and the occasional panel we do remove is usually a quick job.

How much mess does it make?

Far less than the alternatives, because the blasting media disappears. What is left is the contaminant itself, which we contain and clean up.

Do you come to us?

Yes, that is how we work. Nothing needs to be loaded or shipped. We bring the full setup to you anywhere in South Florida, from Miami out to around a hundred miles.

What does a job cost?

Most of the price is time on site, and time depends on how much buildup there is and how easy it is to reach. Send photos and a description and you get an actual number back, not a range pulled out of the air.

How soon can you look at it?

That depends mostly on your calendar. If a line is coming down for maintenance, give us the date and the window, and we will tell you right away whether the rig can be there for it.

The comparison

Why not just pressure wash it

  • Hand scraping

Slow, inconsistent, and the tool marks the surface. Fine for a small area, unworkable across a machine.

  • Media blasting

It takes the top off whatever it touches. That is the point on rusted plate and the problem everywhere else.

  • Pressure washing

The water has to go somewhere, and on most equipment that somewhere is inside it.

  • Solvent and degreaser

Good at softening, bad at leaving. There is always a residue and always a drum to get rid of.

  • Dry ice

The deposit shrinks away from the surface it is stuck to and releases. The ice is gone before it can do any harm.

What comes off

What comes off, and why

Here is the short version of what comes off. Anything layered onto metal or tooling is a likely candidate, and the list covers the requests we see most.

  • Resin and mold release

Production residue cured onto tooling. Solvent softens it and leaves its own film; the ice lifts it and takes nothing with it.

  • Paint and coatings

Removed selectively where the substrate underneath has to survive, which rules out most abrasive approaches.

  • Salt and corrosion product

The year-round problem on the coast. The finish holding corrosion back has to survive the cleaning.

  • Ink and printing residue

Ink and coating on anilox and press rollers, surfaces where changing the texture changes the print.

  • Food residue

Carbonized product build-up in a plant where neither standing water nor a chemical film is acceptable.

  • Grease and oil

On a motor or generator, oily dust packs into the cooling fins and around the housing. Ice takes it off without putting water anywhere near the electrical parts.

  • Carbon and soot

Heat-bonded black deposit. Because heat put it there, a sudden cold front is what breaks its grip.

How a job runs

Nothing about this should be a surprise

Nobody should have to guess what they booked. This is every stage of a job in the order it happens.

  • You describe the job

Describe the equipment and the mess. If it cannot come offline that changes the plan, so say so early.

  • We look at access and containment

The planning is mostly logistics. Can the truck get near the equipment, and if not, how much hose do we need to cover the gap?

  • We test a small area

Nothing visible gets blasted until the settings have been tried on a hidden area. What suits heavy steel can be too much for a thin or soft part, and the test catches that.

  • We blast, then clean up

The ice is gone the moment it does its work. What stays behind is the grease or carbon that came off, and collecting that is part of the job, not an extra.

  • You look before we pack up

If something needs another pass we do it then, on site, while the rig is still running. That is a better outcome for everyone than a callback.

What to expect on site

The media is solid CO2, nothing toxic and nothing left behind, but it pushes oxygen out of a closed room. Ventilation gets planned before the hose is connected.

Loud, yes, but only while we are blasting. Between passes it is quiet enough to talk through how the job is going.

A part that just came clean will be chilly for a few minutes. Let it warm before you coat, polish or apply anything to it.

Nothing from you is required to run the rig. Our compressor and hose come with us on every job.
